Michelle Mortensen is applauded for her stance on women empowerment. She left her successful career as a journalist and jumped into politics with both feet. Mortensen is running for Nevada Congressional District 3.

She is running on the Republican platform because it fits her conservative views. She says there is no other platform she would run on. Mortensen is running for District 3. She lives just outside District 3, in District 4. However, during her time as a consumer advocate for KLAS, she helped people in all the districts, but District 3 is closest to her heart. “I have done more for CD3 than any other candidate on the ballot, Republican or Democrat.”

Mortensen is a supporter of gay marriage and gay communities, though she does believe in the Biblical definition of marriage as between a man and woman. However, She believes the church perspective is very clear: “We are supposed to love people. We are not supposed to condemn them based on who people want to be with. On the same side I do not believe a pastor or church should have to marry a gay couple if they don’t believe in that. I think that is totally okay.” Her husband is an ordained minister and he would not marry a homosexual couple.

Mortensen is a licensed minister and she is not sure if she would marry a gay couple. She said it would depend upon the situation. However, no one has the right to say, “You can’t do anything which is legal, and it is legal in this country. I don’t see what all the hubbub is about.”

“As Christians, it is our job to show people the love of Jesus Christ.”

“This is a prime opportunity for someone like myself to run. We need fresh faces in the Republican Party. We need young blood in the Republican Party. Some of those guys are so out of touch they have no idea what an internet cookie is..  We need younger, fresher faces in Congress. We certainly need women in Congress.”

“What I felt about the president when he ran for office is 1. He gave me the inspiration to say, ‘I can do this too.’ 2. You can run for office and win based on the pure fact that you get things done. That’s all I did in Southern Nevada was solve people’s problems. So, I am the ideal choice to go to Congress on that alone. I am just going to be an extension of what I have always done.”

Mortensen voted against the legalization of marijuana, but she realizes it has a place in pain management … it is a new area she is looking into. However, it is legal in Nevada. Mortensen says the state has “opened Pandora’s Box and now we have to deal with it.” Congress is going to have to get involved because there are millions of dollars in cash with all the dispensaries and no way to bank it.

“Compassionate immigration reform” is realizing that not all people are bad. People have gone off the deep end and have been so mean in labeling groups. President Trump offered a four-pillar plan during the State of the Union Address that was a beautiful compromise. However, no one wanted to get on board. They did not want to compromise, which is truly unfortunate. There is nothing wrong with vetting people. There is nothing wrong with making sure the people who are in the United States want to be here and should be here. “I don’t know when vetting became a bad thing.”

“You wouldn’t meet someone for the first time and ask them to watch your children while you went to Starbucks.” “You would never do that.”

“We are a country based on law. You have to follow the law.”
