On Jan. 3, 2016, at 23:05 UTC, three earthquakes rocked the border of Myanmar and India. The magnitude of the tremblors was 6.8 and 6.9 with depths of 35 km, 40 km, and 37 km.

Some of the cities reportedly affected by the tremblor in India include Imphal, Mayang Imphal, Moirand, and Thoubal. Dhaka, Bangladesh felt the shaking 351 km from the hypocenter. There have been 102 reports from 30 cities and more coming in steadily. Statements have concluded there was violent shaking for 20, 10, and then 40 seconds. Many have described their experience as “horrible, violent, and scary.”

The earthquakes hit in the middle of the night. Earthquake Report states this is the most dangerous time of day to experience tremblors because people are inside, sleeping, and unprepared. It is anticipated there will be a severe amount of damage, a multitude of injuries, and even possible deaths. The first earthquake happened under the city of Nungba and all three were on land in the general area.

According to Earthquake Report, there is confirmation of extensive property damage in Dhaka Bangladesh and several other cities. The United States Geological Society states that “very strong shaking” was felt by 147, 000 people.

Reports from Twitter and Facebook’s Earthquake Impact Database state that there has been one casualty and eight injured.

The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services has stated that historical data concludes that India is not at risk for a tsunami. Headliners Today will offer follow-up reports as they become available.
