Science Technology and the Fight Against Aging

Science
Science and Technology have been put to many great uses. There is hardly any aspect of our daily lives that scientific advancements have not affected. It is, therefore, little wonder that science and technology are now being employed in the fight against the effects of aging. While nothing as at yet can be done about the aging process, more and more people are doing everything possible to reduce the effects of aging.

Our focus in this article is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). In 1966, Robert A. Wilson, M.D published a book titled “Feminine Forever.” In this book, he claimed that menopause was preventable. His argument was based on the fact that menopause was brought about when certain hormones in the female body were no longer in production. He argued that if these hormones were successfully replaced, the process could be reversed and women could be feminine forever.

Needless to say, this science news was met with so much enthusiasm and a lot of women signed up for this therapy. There were certain unexpected side effects, which resulted in a modified version of this therapy (Bio=identical Hormone Replacement Therapy) coming into the scene. Our focus here is not the side effects of the therapy, but rather the desire to remain young forever.

A lot of women approach the issue of menopause with apprehension. It throws right in their faces the fact that they are growing old. This apprehension encourages them to seek ways to reverse or at least minimize the effects of aging on them hence the growing popularity of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. This particular variation of hormone replacement operates on the principle that the body can be deceived into thinking the hormones it is receiving are those produced naturally in it. This is supposedly achieved by using hormones that have the same chemical structure as the hormones produced naturally in the body. The hormones previously used were either synthetic or derived from animals and did not have the same chemical structure as those produced naturally in the body. This is thought to be the reason why serious side effects were recorded.

Today with hormone replacement therapy, the effects of menopause, andropause and other conditions resulting from hormonal imbalance brought about by aging can now be managed. Men will be glad to know that reduced sexual drive, which can be the result of hormonal imbalance, can be managed with hormone replacement.

As more advancement is being made in the science of hormone replacement, more and more pre-menopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal women are sure to seek hormone replacement therapy as they seek to stay feminine forever or at least as long as they possibly can. If there is the possibility that women can really stay feminine for much longer with hormone replacement, then a lot of women will clearly go for this. In the same vein, if there is a chance that a man can remain virile for as long as he lives with the aid of hormone replacement, it is certain almost every man will want to avail himself of the therapy.

Many times, our self-esteem is linked to these physical issues. While some may consider them not too important, anything that can help improve the quality of life that people enjoy as they grow older should certainly be encouraged. We look forward to more scientific advancements that will help keep us young and active for much longer.
