‘Fifty Shades of Grey’: Book Review

Fifty Shades of Grey E. L. James Book Movie Tie-In
When I first heard of The New York Times best seller over 100 million sold copies sold Fifty Shades of Grey, I didn’t think it was at all a big deal. I think back then I was into Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight books at the time. There was also a rumor that the author of Fifty Shades of Grey E L James was actually mirroring her characters off Edward Cullen and Bella Swan from Twilight further giving me no desire to read any of the Fifty Shades of Grey books.

What a huge mistake I would have made if a good friend hadn’t told me about the book in the first place. First of all, there is no way E L James based her characters from any of the Twilight books given the intense background and nature of the book. For anyone who hasn’t read the book the book isn’t “soft core porn” as some like to think. True the main character Christian Grey is into S&M but there is a deeper and darker reason why most originating from his childhood, and when he meets Anastasia Steel his interest and attraction to her is immediate. Sure he sees her as an innocent inexperienced young woman that he can control given his experience with other women, but those women were willing and knew what they were getting them self into. Anastasia Steel had no idea, which is what I think appealed to Christian Grey in the first place. Getting past the relationship, he needed control and was only use to having sex in one particular way which we all know what that was.

The deeper meaning behind the raw sex aspect was due to Christian Grey’s troubled past and childhood, which gives the deeper meaning behind the reason of he sexual appetite. Now to the movie, just like Stephenie Meyer’s Hollywood felt that this book was to good not to be on the big screen and fans everywhere couldn’t agree more. However, giving the amount of graphic sexual content in the book, producers felt that it would be more like watching porn then an actually movie, so downplaying the intense sex scene’s of the book was very important. Here is my only problem–true sex is a big part of the book considering that’s the tone. Moreover, to remove a particular sex scenes is basically depriving fans and others who haven’t read the book the soul journey of Christian Grey’s and Anastasia Steel’s transformation and growth throughout they’re complicated relationship which first started out as a “business arrangement.” The actor Jamie Dornan, who was a model before he was an actor, even said that there will be no frontal nudity. Here is what fans need to understand, the actors and actresses of the film, Fifty Shades of Grey, would love to make a powerful film and do the book justice but at the same token feels that they shouldn’t have to compromise they’re integrity in the process and I couldn’t agree more.

There are ways of making a powerful film especially something like Fifty Shades of Grey tastefully that will still reach it’s audience without compromising the integrity of the film. I think that is the angle producers and E L James is going for. They picked a great cast for the movie and to be perfectly honest in my personal opinion the characters I pictured in my head as I read the book was completely different. I saw Alex Pettyfer as Christian Grey, Alexis Bledel as Anastasia Steel, Blake Lively as Kate Kavangh (Anastasia’s roommate and best friend), Jay Hernandez as Jose Rodriguez (Anastasia’s friend), and the list goes on. I’m sure anyone else who read the book also had other characters in mind for the movie or imagined them being someone else other then what the producer’s picked or interviewed for the role.

I’m also sure that fans everywhere will be dissecting the movie right down to the very littlest detail comparing it to the book (I know I will be). However, that isn’t the point, the point is that no matter the dramatic changes that will take place in the movie due to the book’s graphic nature, people everywhere will finally get to see what all the buzz is about come February 13, 2015 when Fifty Shades of Grey finally hits theaters everywhere. I’m even willing to be that the box offices everywhere will be sold out in the first week. All I can say is, when that time comes I will be there ready to be blown away. I’m sure we will not be disappointed, E L James will not let the nature of her book be slaughtered by Hollywood, she knows what her fans want when it comes to her book and the movie and will do her best to deliver.
