My idea of beauty has changed drastically over the years. I struggled for so long to grasp the why behind my role in the entertainment industry. For a long time, I looked at it as an adventure, a hobby, or just a way of making money, so I could have more time to enjoy travel, family, and personal relationships. Now, I’m beginning to understand that it’s more of a business than a hobby and is a calling of sorts, not just a job. How can this be? As a model, I am both an artist and a businesswoman. Moreover, I am also a woman with a worldview that is meant to permeate my career.
Many Christians, myself included, have had a hard time grasping fashion is an aspect of creation that can be redeemed. I used to despise it, because I saw the power it contained to destroy through the pressure of striving, perfection, conditional acceptance, and an unattainable standard of beauty. Now, I see the power to invite people into the story of beauty. We lose the wonder in life when we worship the creation, but when we worship the Creator of the beauty it frees us to live inside the mystery.
We only see things in part here, but what if what we see points the world toward the author of a bigger story? Kuyper describes the effect of sin on our ability to think the way we were originally designed to. This brings us to a place of understanding when He bestowed that gift of creating beauty when he created us in his image and likeness.
All true beauty points to the hope of the day when all things are renewed. Beauty hits a nerve inside every person, whether we appreciate it in the form of fashion or not. Beauty tells a story. Ecclesiastes says we were “eternity has been placed in our hearts.” No wonder we desire to have and create beauty. Why should we as believers abandon an industry where we have a chance to tell the greatest story of all? In the end, we will all have glorified bodies and will explore a heaven of wealth, beauty, and perfection where we will once again live in perfect relationship with the God of beauty.
